Let us remember St. Gertrude

the patron Saint of Cats....

Image of Saint Gertrude of Nivelles, Patron of Cats and Gardeners - 11 x 14 Print of Original Acrylic Painting by Carolee Clark

 Hmmm... in a round about way... I think...

From the internets:

"You might think of March 17 as St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s also the feast day of a lesser-known saint: Gertrude of Nivelles, patron saint of cats. At least that's what the internet says, even if the Roman Catholic Church has never made it official.

Gertrude of Nivelles was born around 626 in present-day Belgium into a well-connected noble family. But she didn’t stick to the script that most noble women were made to follow in her era: When she was 10, Gertrude reportedly refused—loudly and angrily—to be married to the son of a duke. In fact, she insisted that she would never marry at all.

When her father died, Gertrude and her mother, Itta, moved to Nivelles (south of present-day Brussels) to set up a monastery, where she became an abbess. She became known for her devotion to scholarly and charitable works, and for taking care of orphans, widows, and pilgrims. She was also visited by spiritual visions and said to know most of the Bible by heart. But her ascetic lifestyle, which included long periods without food or sleep, took a toll on her health, and she resigned as abbess in 656 at the age of 30. She died three years later, and St. Patrick himself is said to have watched over her on her deathbed.

Because of her reputation for hospitality, Gertrude was originally the patron saint of travelers and the recently dead (who were seen as making their own form of journey) as well as gardeners and the mentally ill. But as the centuries wore on, she also became associated with rodents. The link may have involved early Christian beliefs: Gertrude was known to pray for the souls of those in purgatory, and medieval artists often portrayed those souls as mice. Gertrude’s iconography—the items in a painting or statue that told illiterate people who the saint was—always included mice or rats at her feet, climbing up her robes, or climbing the crozier that symbolized her role as an abbess.

The connection between Gertrude and rodents became solidified as veneration of her spread throughout northern Europe, and little silver or gold statues of mice were left at a shrine to her in Cologne as late as 1822. By then, she had become the saint one asked to intercede in the case of a rodent infestation; it was said that the water from her abbey’s well would chase away rats and mice.

In the past few decades, faithful Catholics (and cat lovers) have made the leap from associating Gertrude with warding off mice to associating her with cats. The idea seems to have started in the 1980s, more than 1300 years after she lived. Some sources say the first publication to link Gertrude and cats was a 1981 catalog, Metropolitan Cats, put out by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Since then, the idea that Gertrude is the patron of cats—and cat owners—has spread. As saint expert Thomas J. Craughwell explains it, “St. Gertrude … is invoked against mice and rats, which has led cat lovers to assume that Gertrude was a cat person, and so the ideal patron of their favorite pet.” There are now many icons and paintings of her with a cat.

Although the Vatican can make a saint’s patronage official, it has never done so with Saint Gertrude and cats. But most patron saints have been assigned their duties by popular tradition rather than by official recognition. So, if you want to get a medal of St. Gertrude to hang around your cat’s neck, go right ahead.

 Patron saint of cats?

Because of the great mouse exodus, people referred to her as the patroness of cat lovers. She is often depicted with a cat near her or with mice running up her staff. The mice in her icons are said to represent souls trapped in Purgatory, whom she diligently prayed for.Mar 17, 2019

Annie Lee the Argosy Update No. 051

Happy New Year!
2022
Praying it is filled with health and goodness for each of you!

 We sure missed seeing the snow!
Seriously!
But while y'all were enjoying enduring it
We were in Florida...
It wasn't always necessarily SUNNY - but was warmer than home.
[But rest assured - we've been at Disney in January when it was 26*.]
Here's a quick re-cap of #AnnieLeetheArgosy 's Florida Adventure.
We traveled about 1640 miles in less than two weeks.
We spent a quick overnight in Perry, GA on the way down...
And just as we got to the campground there was a little hail and swirly wind storm...
[the real tornadoes were north of us a bit...]

Our first stop was a vintage camping event in Salt Springs, FL
where we met up with some camping buddies to visit
and ring in the new year.
The rain cleared out and it was WONDERFUL.
The springs were beautiful
[and warm!]
Our next stop was Disney's Ft. Wilderness!
 It was so fun to take our time and explore
without going into the parks at all...
And y'all know we love this campground
that we've been camping at since 1994!
 We even extended a day -
which was great in so many ways!
Next stop - Manatee Springs
A Florida State Park
There is no [zero/nada/ NONE] cell service...
 [+ we had a little camper issue...]
so we were glad we'd cancelled a day and only had one overnight.
Next we enjoyed the drive up Hwy 98 to the panhandle...
And who can resist that freshly picked citrus?!
We set up for a few days at Top Sail Hill for
The Can Opener event -
Over 120 airstreams!
AND WE LOVE THE PRISTINE BEACH!
 [a winter beach is always nice to me...
and despite the little cold front, it was still nice enough to enjoy...]
I love seeing Annie Lee's hippie / fairy lights through the windows...
 I may have to adapt something like this to stay
once the other issues are worked out... lol
Alas... all good things must come to an end...
 and here she is all packed up for travel home...
 [rest assured, there's plenty of 'outdoor' stuff on our beds too...]
But WAIT.
We took a little detour over to The Shoals
and ended up in a campground right behind the Alabama Music Hall of Fame
that was very convenient and had one of the best bath houses I've ever been in.
 It was great to visit with family and catch up with friends!
So - just wanted to give you a quick overview of how our new year started...
We're settling back into our routine here at home...
LOL
[I think they missed us.]
I hope to write an individual post
about each area / campground we were in soon -
[so you can look forward to that. Ha.]
Happy New Year!

OH, goodness - how can it be time

 for a monthly re-cap once again?

Note: I do these for a couple of reasons - I want the highlights preserved so I can find them when scrapbooking [ ha] ... and I want to document that I'm actually accomplishing some things in these days that flow one into another...lol.. .
Time can surely get away from you when you have nothing to do - ha
[even when we stay busy... or especially so?]
So here we go -
April flew by, didn't it?
I LOVE spring flowers in the South!
I know I say it over and over again - but it's true!
Something new is blooming every week, and I LOVE IT.
Note: we need to purchase a few new dogwoods this year as our 50+ years old
are not doing well these days... Age gets to all of us, right?

I cleaned  the patio / back flower bed area / yard...
Still have another big pile of brush to burn... again, old trees. y'all -
 And they lose braches like I wish I could lose weight. ha.

April started with a wonderful Easter sunrise service near our house
where we could see the sun coming up over the mountain.
Just beautiful - plus [a BIG plus to me] they sang the Easter hymns I grew up singing!

Afterwards we came home and enjoyed a sweet, yummy breakfast with our youngins.
I love when we can all be together!
And things are looking more 'normal' every day!

We enjoyed outdoor worship with our church -
and it was wonderful to be back with a group of people who love The Lord.
[But it was sunny and  HOT  - so glad I had my umbrella in the car!]
Then we enjoyed a good lunch and fellowship with Craig's mother in The Shoals...
we're all vaccinated, so we ate INSIDE a restaurant... but it still felt weird...
I also attended one of my monthly prayer group's in-person meetings only to find that someone there was diagnosed positive the NEXT DAY [after a hospitalization they are doing well...] So I'm still being cautious... while I trust the vaccine, I don't want to inadvertantly pass this horrible virus on to someone else...

Craig and I enjoyed an outdoor concert where the seating was set up in pods...
It was a beautiful night to listen to some great music!

I attempted to make our traditional Easter cake for a family gathering and, oops. This new cake mix STUCK to the pan and came out in chunks... so it quickly became an Easter punch bowl cake by adding some bananas, crushed pineapple and whipped cream... yum.
And, Oh. My. Goodness.
I sooooooo enjoyed being together with sister, brother, and their families!
It's the first time we'd been [[ALL]] together since December 2019...
and it was wonderful.

I've decided it's time to 'up my game' on decorations for #AnnieLeetheArgosy
and I AM LOVING this step Craig built for us!
[Quite possibly my favorite project for the month!]

1 - It's soooo stable and comfortable to use... and
2 - [I think] it looks mighty good with the decor... whither it's a summer vibe...
Or the regular [kinda, sorta] mid-century look I'm going for...

And it's camping weather, y'all!
Still cool enough for a jacket and campfire!

We enjoyed a vintage camping rally at Honeycomb with friends...
- some of whom were very gracious to help Craig get our awning on...

And I love {{LOVE}} how we can take the bars off the camper and have them stand upright. When we use it that way the bar / arm is out of the way near the door...
so cool....
 And kudos for Craig for always keeping an eye out for a good deal since these came off that camper that was headed to the scrap yard... Oh.My.

We also enjoyed a vintage rally that was sponsored by Reelfoot Lake State Park in TN that was fun to attend... such a beautiful park with a little seawall / sidewalk
right outside our camper door...
[Notice: camper arms are configured differently here: one with bar on camper, one standing straight = LOVE IT.]

And then we stopped off at Tishomingo State Park [in Mississippi] on the way home
and decided on a whim, to just stay over night....

I'm kinda loving this retirement gig...
And we really are enjoying our little retirement home we can take along with us!
[And I love internet connections, just sayin']

Later in the month we drove Craig's mother to her doctor's appointment in Nashville...
it was a beautiful day to be out and about...
and a good time to visit together!

We ended the month with our April birthday celebrations!
Sitting at a table ALL TOGETHER [outside] and it was just wonderful! In a couple of more weeks they will be post vax and we will all be comfortable enough to do it again!

So I leave you with this photo I took [with my cell phone] while traveling during the month -
I love the pop of red with the fields of green!
Spring is all about new life!
And my mama always said it reminded her of new life in Christ.
Thank goodness He is always there ready to forgive and help us begin anew again
[and again - yes He loves us so!]
Oops - maybe that should be in an 'He Speaks to Me' post... but it's true.
I hope you seek Him and KNOW Him.

The Gate of the Year

[Photo cred: the internets]

This has been a favorite poem of mine for years and has been pasted
 in the front of my planner more often than not....
And while many of us may be looking toward 2021 with THIS in mind....
Let's go into 2021 with our hand in God's...

THE GATE OF THE YEAR

‘God Knows'

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.
And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

So heart be still:
What need our little life
Our human life to know,
If God hath comprehension?
In all the dizzy strife
Of things both high and low,
God hideth His intention.

God knows. His will
Is best. The stretch of years
Which wind ahead, so dim
To our imperfect vision,
Are clear to God. Our fears
Are premature; In Him,
All time hath full provision.

Then rest: until
God moves to lift the veil
From our impatient eyes,
When, as the sweeter features
Of Life’s stern face we hail,
Fair beyond all surmise
God’s thought around His creatures
Our mind shall fill.[3]

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's a little history of it ....
[from Wikipedia]
Enjoy -
The poem, written in 1908 and privately published in 1912,
was part of a collection titled The Desert
It caught the public attention and the popular imagination when King George VI quoted it in his 1939 Christmas broadcast to the British Empire. The poem may have been brought to his attention by his wife, Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Consort).[1]
The book The Servant Queen and the King She Serves[2] published for Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday, its foreword being by that monarch, says that it was the young Princess Elizabeth herself, aged 13, who handed the poem to her father.
The poem was widely acclaimed as inspirational, reaching its first mass audience in the early days of the Second World War. Its words remained a source of comfort to the Queen Mother for the rest of her life, and she had its words engraved on stone plaques and fixed to the gates of the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the King was interred. The Queen Mother was also buried here in 2002, and the words of "The Gate of the Year" were included in a reflection in her funeral's order of service.
Happy New Year!
Praying God's blessings on each of you -
and I encourage you to get out there [safely] and LIVE as you
 intentionally find things good each day!
