Another
great book from Valerie Fraser Luesse!
I loved stepping back in time
and imagining
my grandmother in these same situations!
[I hope] we all
know families like the Bullocks; families that are
loving and accepting,
and kind.
Families who will take care of those they care about.
Both
sisters - Emmy [my own gr-mother's name] and Callie learned these
lessons well.
The sisters leaned into these life lessons and each other during the good times and bad. Even when they were separated as one was very sick and the other was dealing with tragic memory loss, they shared their deepest thoughts and love through their letters. They encouraged each other to be the best they could be as their lives changed so completely. It was love that helped them go on....
I loved the inclusion of Hepsy, Tirzeh, and Lily. The relationship
between the family and their help in the home was probably
unconventional for the time. Luesse portrays the workers as happy, but
also points out the unavailability of choices in their lives.
As Tirzah
points out, "Ever' generation got power to do better. Ever' chile bring
hope...Let me deliver hope." And I think that's a quote I can hold on to
for a while!
Note: I was given a copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes.
