In case you missed it....

U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. (Bob Gathany/bgathany@AL.com)

Last week is the 50th anniversary of man walking on the moon!
So, OF COURSE – we are ALL. ABOUT. IT.
here in the Rocket City – since our little town played such an important role in it all.
Photo cred: news outlet
[I remember attending a conference here in town not so long ago with a group of people from out of town and someone asking, “What’s up with all the German restaurants?”
Duh. Wernher von Braun. Thank you very much.]
There’s just too much info to share[here] about how Von Braun’s rocket interests
impacted our area - and of course the world!
But last week is all about the moon landing / walk / dancing in the streets, etc.

Monday night our local concerts in the park was all set to focus on music from 1969 with Big Daddy Kingfish and JED Eye in honor of the Lunar Landing – and while I was only nine years old [soon to be ten] during this historic event, Sister was teenager and played ALL the great sixties music on the little record player in our shared bedroom, so I consider it the music of my childhood… and can still sing along with most every song…
I was soooo looking forward to it -
But, alas our crazy pop-up thunder storms cancelled it. boo.
July 16th at 9:32 a.m. Apollo 11 lifted off on the Saturn IV Rocket
[built here in Huntsville – replica rocket in photo above.]
Our Space Center planned a World Record Launch Rocket with over 5,000 model rockets being shot simultaneously near space camp at 9:32 a.m.!
And we decided at the last minute to join the crowd...
[We parked out by Aviation Challenge and walked in -
we still remember the KrisKringle Market Experience - ha.]
Afterwards they had to harvest and count each one - and they shot off extra, so we're pretty sure they broke the world record...
But the official count has not been given yet...

The Rocket Powers that be asked the world to join in the celebration by shooting any kind of rocket at 9:32 in your time zone – so we bought a couple of stomp rockets to have some fun.
Craig was quite a hit with the kids who formed a line before I could even give it a go - ha.
It was a fun way to share the experience...
But! We’re not the only ones! Search #globalrocketlaunch
to see that many, many people joined in!
And they even sent you a certificate if you registered with them.
That evening we continued the celebration with, waht else?
ROCKET POPS.
I'd forgotten how tasty these multi-flavored pops were!
We’re missed a couple of fun events towards the end of the week
[due to some previously planned travel that we love as much or more!]
There’s a couple of fun things going on to celebrate!
On  the day MAN WALKED ON THE MOON it was celebrated in the streets around the courthouse square, and since Von Braun recommended, “don’t hang up your dancing slippers,” – Huntsville had a street party Friday evening with exhibits from Apollo, Space Shuttle, International Space Station, and SLS.
Party like it’s 1969. Ha.
On the 20th there was a Summer Fest Moon Landing Concert in the shadow of the Saturn IV replica with the Black Jacket Symphony. I'm sure it was cool with lunar images projected on the Saturn IV at the end of the evening…
And the celebration continues at the Huntsville Museum of Art, 300 Church St., where visitors can see the moon as they’ve never seen it before.
“A New Moon Rises: Views from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera”
features stunning large-scale, high-resolution imagery of the lunar surface, from the Apollo landing sites to the looming mountains rising from the darkness of the lunar poles.
The exhibition runs through Aug. 11.
We hope to get by there on a Thursday evening before this exhibit closes…
And there’s also going to be an Apollo 11K
on September 15th with 11K, 5K and 1K races… and y’all know meI may have to sign up for this event just for the t-shirt.
While I'm [so] not a runner... I think I could walk a few miles....
You can still celebrate the lunar landing!
Grab an oreo marshmallow moon cookie
[with the space shuttle, the moon, and YES, and astronaut!]
or a moon pie!
Or just stomp a rocket and watch it fly!
