Encyclopedia of Your Ordinary Life - K

A few years ago I had the opportunity to complete this extraordinary scrapbook album designed by CathyZ and based on the book, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life by Amy Rosenthal. While I still haven't read the book, I love the concept of this album - a random sampling of those ordinary facts about your life [my life.] The homework involves keeping a list, A to Z, of random memories for several weeks and then gathering photos [or not] to support these memories. Love it. The album is really very simple [a la Cathy Z] and easy to put together with only two square photos per page and two to four 'definitions.' Have I said I love this album? And I want to share some of my life with you so I've committed to do just that in 2009 [keep in mind this was completed during the summer of 2007.] I'm going backwards and today I present: K

KITTENS

Baby cats. I wish there was some serum we could give them to keep them small and oh so playful. I’ve always had cats and kittens – from my earliest little black and white cats [one broke its leg and Joe took it to the vet to be set,] all the Siamese, and the ones we have now – Coffee and Cream. Two precious little kitties that we’ve had since birth. And although I’m now allergic [go zertic!] I’ve always said that I believe a house is not a home without at least one!

KRISPY CRÈME

Doughnuts. The best in the land! Warm! And when the ‘hot’ sign is on, there’s just nothing better than to have one soft and gooey and sweet. I was first introduced to these delicate confections when I was 8 years old and visiting Cindy in Huntsville. We stopped by the shop after church on Sunday evening and Uncle Elton took me inside to choose from more doughnuts than I’d ever seen in my whole life! Now that we live here we occasionally go by the same shop [when the ‘hot’ sign is on!] and get a doughnut or two. And every time I go inside, I think of that first time I was so impressed with all the different varieties.

KITS

A grouping of scrapbook supplies that are coordinated to complete several layout designs. Faith Based Pages Monthly Kits is the little ministry God has given us to help others put their faith on their scrapbook pages. While this little journey of faith has had its ups and downs, every time I think about giving it up God reassures us that we are doing what He wants. And it’s grown from a little monthly kit company to a whole community of friends who share the same desire to put their faith in their scrapbooks.

Yes, Luke is gone.

[Somehow, I prefer ‘gone; to dead’ although I know they mean the same thing.] It’s been anticipated for a few months now, maybe longer. And while the decision was not a hard one to make – it was a hard thing to do. And I have to say that I have a wonderful husband who took him in without me – probably understanding that as hard as THAT was – it would’ve been doubly hard with me in the mix. So it’s done. And I’ll admit – I’m a little sad and know that one day I’ll remember the fun times with the little guy – but right now all I remember is his deafness and confusion and poopies [and pee pees] all over the floor.

Luke was our miniature schnauzer. This IS a favorite photo of him and me – with his little bomber jacket on [we were both a little younger then.] He was, what? Eleven – twelve years old? And a good dog. Here’s the thing – I believe that God created humans and animals differently and the value of human life is much greater than that of an animal. We’re created in the image of God, after all, and have a soul and a connection to our God that animals just don’t have.

So for those who have said – Do you want to be put down when you’re old, incontinent, and deaf? I answer that I value a human life much more strongly than that of an animal, and I hope you do too. [And will say that my opinions of keeping a dying person alive -- one whose system is shutting down -- are probably vastly different than some one who hasn’t worked with the frail and disabled and dying for 25+ years…] I believe we should care for and protect the animals we are responsible for – and I also believe that there comes a time [perhaps when they appear to not even know where they are] when it’s time to let an animal go.

I don’t live a life where I can crate and go home and deal with an incontinent dog day in and day out. I know people who do and have…and that’s their choice to make – it’s just not for us. So I’ve joked most of the summer that we have Luke on a behavior modification plan – our behavior – because every time he’d even look at the door we sent him out. We sadly watched as he’d come back to the wrong door and couldn’t hear us call to him as we stood less than two feet away. And even with all that we continued to clean up after him. We talked about this and decided that we’d try our best to wait until the late fall – maybe Christmas [I somehow wanted us to all be together when this happened, because being the social worker that I am I want us to all ‘process’ this together…] But after I spent most of the morning Saturday with my Little Green Mean Machine [thanks once again to Susanne for letting me in on the secret of this great little cleaner] I declared it must be done on Monday but by Sunday night I was saying [once again] that we needed to wait a bit longer. I worked out of town Tuesday and Wednesday of last week and was told that he seemed to have lost all continence and that my guys spent both days cleaning carpet off and on as it continued. So the decision was made. And while I am a little sad, I have no regrets. It was the right thing, for us, to do at this time.

Creativity

My first project with my kit from The Girl's Loft:
I watered down some pink paint and gave the dictionary page a 'wash' of pink and the quote was printed on the computer with a colored text block, then cut into word strips:
"Be aware of wonder. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. - Robert Fulghum

My boys are great!

A couple of weeks ago we set aside some time to move some wood that had piled up from falling limbs. This allowed for my compost pile to be moved behind the garden instead of beside it. We had to be careful and on the lookout for spiders and snakes,
but surprisingly, only saw one black widow...Of course, we kept some of the smaller pieces of wood to burn in the fire pit.
And scooped up the rotten stuff and added it to the compost...
When we work together we always try to have a little fun as well... so it was so fun to see Drew riding in the wagon after walking down to unload a pile of debris - Matt got in on the fun too!Things look great around the garden and
I'm blessed to have my sweeties willing to do the heavy work with me. You guys are terrific! And john deere is pretty awesome too...

Yes! We have lots of tomatoes!

and we're enjoying them oh, so much! and I've gotta say, stomach issues aside [and things are okay for me there at the moment] - there's really few things sweeter in life than eating a tomato like an apple straight off the vine...
enjoy summer, y'all!

LAWN MOWER
A machine that is used to keep our yard tidy and neat. I so enjoy the mind-less task of mowing the lawn. And now that we have a bigger lawn and a riding lawn mower I always think of those long summer days riding lawn mowers through the fields with Debby around her house [of course, the blades were up!] We would ride for hours and the tops of my legs would get so sun-burned [no sun screen back then.] So much fun until we got our little Honda 50’s then we thought we really had it all! These days I enjoy riding up and down the hills of our back yard, mindlessly mulling over the things in my life…

LUNCH
Throughout our marriage, Craig and I have always made the effort to meet for lunch to reconnect, compare schedules, thoughts, and dreams at least once a week, without the boys. We believe it’s made our marriage stronger and helped us be a team in parenting. Now that my work is a little more flexible, I often meet with girlfriends for lunch too. -- A nice little break in the middle of the day or work week.

Creativity

Finally - I've finished up my 'One Week' album
that Stephanie H challenged us to do some time ago...
Photos and journaling were completed in April!

How hard can it be to put together a little 6x6 book? I used an American Crafts scrapbbok that I got in the Easter section of Hobby Lobby for like, 80% off, after the holiday, took the two middle pages out and it was perfect! Just a short little slice of our lives as empty nesters.
[So glad the boys are home now, for the summer!]

Creativity

Been meaning to post this for A WHILE now -

Loved the inchie swap I participated in before Inspired!
So fun to have all these little alphabet 'tiles' in one place!
And here's a layout with the things I got when I volunteered at CKU Nashville
[paper - stamps - alpha stickers - rub on letters - chipboard]

Creativity

I still love knitting and want to try making a sweater for myself - but first am practicing on smaller clothes - still learning as is evidenced by the slight point in the cap -

Still, it's so fun to see MK wearing something I made. And since it's supposed to be a 2T size, maybe she can wear it on into the winter.

Creativity

I think' I've mentioned that we do red-white [cool whip]-blue jello for the fourth and I wanted to try to re-use those little boxes - This a scripture card holder!

The little cards each have a different scripture to hang on your bathroom mirror, fridge, or take with you throughout the week to memorize - and then place in the box.
[Click on the photo to see it larger]
Cute and very easy...
Just trim paper to fit the box, adhere, sand and paint the edges. Make title on the computer; trim and adhere, place flower accent. then make your scripture cards to fit with just a bit of trim [try to not make them too bulky so you can get more int he box]

Garden Update

It's still growing - I missed some zucchini this week and let's just say we could've made some good vegetable dolls out of 'em like we used to do with Mama Moland's overgrown cukes! I chopped up one end and sauteed it anyway - yummy.
I really do love fresh vegetables.

Have harvested some yellow squash and tomatoes and eggplants and beans and peppers. The giant sunflower has gotten so big that it's fallen over - look at the difference between this week and two weeks ago [you can click on topic - garden on the side to see all the garden posts] - wow!
Things grow fast!

MATT

Our second precious son who is full of energy and always ready for fun. [As a child, Matt once said that he could only have one activity / sport after school because he wanted to be sure to have time for friends.] Love the painting he did [shown this page] when he was in kindergarten. There was a vase with the flower and lots of other things sitting all around it. They were told to paint what they saw and it’s easy to see that Matt’s perspective is to see the whole scene and take it all in. What a great perspective to have! It’s such a joy to see his love of the Lord as he grows into a young adult.

McDONALD’S SWEET TEA

I admit – I’m addicted and drink at least one [32 oz] each day! Many times I get it half and half, and I could drink 2-3 daily, but have recently learned that tea can hinder the absorption of iron… not good news for me these days.

MUSTANG

My first car! A ’68, painted ‘robin’s egg blue’ – just like my cousin Doug’s. We actually drove around a small town and stopped people with 68’s until we found someone willing to sell theirs [I know- I was spoiled…] So many in my family have driven Mustangs – in some form or fashion- through the years. I’ll always have fond memories of it…

MERT

Mama’s crazy nick name that most of the family calls her. No one has ever really explained where it came from. But it’s the name she answers to whenever her sisters, nieces, or nephews are nearby.

Choice

Everytime you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, al your life you are slowly turning this central thing into a hevenly creature or into a hellish creature. - C. S. Lewis

Catching Fireflies - 5

My take:
[Pensacola- Florida- Lighthouse and Middle Bay - Mobile, AL- Lighthouse - two lighthouses that have been a 'part' of our family for over 20 years - we have paintings of each hanging in our den...]
I believe in the power of prayer and I know our Lord wants us to join together and lift each other up in prayer [I’ve had too many middle of the night awakenings with urgings to pray for others only to learn of unforeseen circumstances in their lives later on…] I want to take the responsibility [and joy!] of standing tall and shining bright for others. We’re in a spiritual battle and I know to fight it will require all my heart, my soul, and strength. And I’m willing to step in and pray for those who may not have the strength to reach out to God…
